(HealthTech Wire / Interview) - Healthcare IT professionals have always been at the forefront when it comes to planning activities for HIMSS Europe, but what can the community look forward to in the next year? We met Christina Roosen, VP of Public Affairs for HIMSS Europe, to find out more details.
What would you consider the highlights for HIMSS Europe in 2016 to be?
2015 has been a great year for HIMSS Europe but expectations for 2016 are higher and so much more exciting!
We are launching new events, initiatives, and trend barometers, with the aim to ensure we provide healthcare IT professionals in Europe with thought leadership, trends and solutions within the industry. Personally, I think 2016 will be the year of the HIMSS Communities, because they have really kicked off now and are becoming increasingly influential for many European regions. The Nordic, Dutch, Ibero-american and French communities are becoming consolidated and new Communities are emerging: the German speaking countries (also known as DACH region) as well as a Central European Community are next on the list.
Some of the Communities will get the chance to gather in the world’s largest healthcare IT event: HIMSS16, which is in Las Vegas in February and March 2016 and all of them will meet at our new World of Health IT event in Barcelona. It is great to be able to provide a solid platform for community members to share knowledge, as technology and innovation continuously transforms how healthcare is delivered.
HIMSS Europe’s new event, World of Health IT Conference & Exhibition, has been officially announced. What can you reveal about the event so far?
I am really excited to go back to Barcelona. Not only because it is now my home town, but also because the largest HIMSS Europe event to date was hosted in Barcelona back in 2010 so we expect the 2016 event, with its new format and structure, to be just as successful.
So far, I can say that WoHIT will encompass a number of tracks, addressing current topics which need addressing. mHealth, Genomics and Cybersecurity, amongst others, will have their own dedicated sessions and exhibition space. After a successful CIO Summit in Valencia this year, I am also happy to announce that the CIO Summit will be part of WoHIT and will include exclusive guided tours through two renowned hospitals in the Catalonian region.
Where does that leave your other signature event, eHealth Week?
I think I can speak on behalf of the whole of the HIMSS Europe team when I say that it is an absolute honour for us to have the chance to host eHealth Week 2016 in such a digitally advanced country as is The Netherlands. The Dutch Ministry of Health have ambitious goals and objectives to transform their healthcare system within the next five years, such as getting 80% of Dutch citizens with a chronic disease to have online access to their medical data or to get 75% of patients with a chronic disease to monitor their health status at home.
The Dutch Ministry of Health, who will hold the Presidency of the Council of the European Union for the first half of 2016, will address their current needs and challenges, as well as next steps in implementing IT solutions in a healthcare environment. The mere fact that we are a part of this is definitely something we should all be looking forward to in 2016!
