TALLINN, ESTONIA - (HealthTech Wire / News) - The high-level conference will address how digital technologies and the wider use of health data are changing our lives and the ways of healthcare. Through a combination of educational sessions, interactive workshops and valuable networking opportunities, the conference will not only showcase already existing digital health solutions, but also use-cases and technologies to demonstrate that citizen-centric health services and systems are genuinely valuable. Ultimately, the showcases will confirm that the future has already arrived and needs to be made available to all Europeans.

European healthcare IT leaders and professionals will gather in Tallinn from 16-18 October 2017. The conference will focus on three main topics: 1. Building citizen-driven demand in eHealth, 2. eHealth supporting the value driven and sustainable health and social services and 3. eHealth as a driver of innovation and economic development.

Christina Roosen, Vice President of Public Affairs at HIMSS Europe said: “We are excited to be partnering with ECHAlliance and the Estonian Ministry of Social Affairs on this high-level conference. Estonia has become a key country when it comes to innovation within digital health and is often described as Europe’s most digitised society. We hope to gather eHealth leaders from across Europe to encourage knowledge sharing so we can strive towards our common goal: to advance healthcare through information technology”.

eHealth in Estonia

Estonia implemented its Health Information System (HIS) in 2008. It is now used by over 98% of Estonian citizens and 99% of all medicine is issued using a digital prescription. The overwhelming success Estonia has had in digitising its national health and care system and achieving to get the vast majority of patients to access their health data online is a success which has not gone unnoticed in Europe.

The 'Estonian e-Health Strategic Plan until 2020', which was developed by the e-Health Working Group set up at the Government Office, is also underway and focuses on the common understanding of how digital solutions contribute to the improvement of the population’s health and solve health problems in Estonia.

Ain Aaviksoo, Deputy Secretary General for E-services and Innovation said: "Innovative digital solutions can help us to provide safer, more convenient and efficient health services to all people in Europe, at the same time ensuring the security of health data and the protection of privacy. The Estonian Presidency will incite Member States and stakeholders to break down the barriers to data-driven digital innovation and to give citizens more control over their health data. Secure use of health data is key to ensure benefits for individuals."
