MALLORCA, SPAIN - (HealthTech Wire / News) — Fundació Hospital Comarcal d’Inca in Mallorca has maintained its status as one of the most digitally mature hospitals in Europe, after successfully passing its Stage 6 HIMSS Analytics Electronic Medical Record Adoption Model (EMRAM) revalidation.

The hospital, which was first awarded the accolade in 2012, just five years after opening, is among 12 Spanish hospitals that have achieved Stage 6. EMRAM Stage 6 is awarded when hospitals have achieved closed-loop medication administration (CLMA) and is the second highest rating on the EMRAM scale.

Several interviews and remote processes, including a site visit from the HIMSS team, re-confirmed Hospital Comarcal d’Inca’s status as a Stage 6 hospital. Members of the delegation visiting the hospital were able to verify that the hospital had maintained a process of continual improvement since achieving the award four years earlier.

“I am proud to announce that the Hospital Comarcal d’Inca in Mallorca successfully passed the HIMSS EMRAM revalidation,” said Jörg Studzinski, Senior Consultant at HIMSS Analytics. “Our visit has confirmed that the hospital is still on track with all digital maturity-related matters. During our thorough inspection, we found that the closed loop medication administration is of a very high quality and is able to reduce medication errors”.

“We were also impressed with the wide acceptance of electronic medical records within the hospital, the standards-based electronic integration of all systems and devices, the quality of the systems used by nursing staff and the standard of disaster recovery within the hospital.”

Aiming for EMRAM Stage 7 status

"The revalidation of the hospital’s EMRAM Stage 6 certification was a welcome challenge for us,” said Soledad Gallardo Bonet, CEO at Comarcal d’Inca Hospital. “We are very proud to belong to this exclusive network of healthcare organisations that have been awarded this prestigious international accolade, thus being able to demonstrate to our users that we carry out the best practices for the benefit of their safety and well-being. Our objective is to continue to improve our healthcare practices through the implementation of healthcare IT and consequently to obtain EMRAM Stage 7 certification within three years.”

HIMSS Analytics is working to revalidate each European hospital that was recognised at Stage 6 and 7 in 2013 or before. The revalidation aims to ensure that hospitals continue to meet the updated and globally accepted EMRAM Stage 6 and 7 standards and also to examine each hospital’s potential to develop its IT infrastructure to ensure the best health and care outcomes for patients.

Hospital Comarcal d’Inca’s status as a Stage 6 hospital was officially recognised at the World of Health IT (WoHIT) in Barcelona in November 2016.
