Data security: ‘Be ready and be cyber resilient’
Article posted on: February 8, 2017
In an article in BJ-HC this month, Derrick Bates, Information & Cyber Security Officer for the North Cumbria University Hospitals NHS Trust, speaks about what the industry can do to steel itself from an onslaught from outside: “The first step is to ensure all partners involved in using patient data are aware of their responsibilities,” says Bates. “The next step is to put in place technical measures to protect patient data 'at rest', 'in transit' and while being processed. This mainly involves encryption. The third step is to put management processes and working protocols in place to ensure staff are doing things properly.”
Bates stresses that everyone within an organisation should be aware of their responsibilities where cybersecurity is concerned – and that management “are both involved and invested”. “Assume an attack will succeed: be ready and be cyber resilient!” he says.
